Brunswick Community College announced this week that Onya Gardner has been named the new head coach of the Dolphins women’s basketball team, taking over a program that enjoyed its most successful season in school history during 2026.
Gardner, who served as an assistant coach from 2016 to 2019 and has acted as a mentor since 2020, brings an intimate knowledge of the team’s culture and expectations.
In a statement, Gardner said she wants to create opportunities for young women both on and off the court, emphasizing academics, personal growth, leadership and competitive success as the pillars of the program.
Building a Holistic Program
Gardner’s vision extends beyond statistics; she plans to integrate academic support services, leadership workshops and community outreach into the daily routine of the team.
Robbie Allen, a longtime colleague and former player, praised Gardner’s commitment, noting that her deep ties to the campus will help foster a stronger connection between the athletes and the broader student body.
Looking Ahead
With the upcoming season on the horizon, Gardner is already mapping out a schedule that balances rigorous competition with developmental milestones, aiming to sustain the momentum generated by last year’s breakthrough.
The college’s athletic director highlighted the strategic timing of the hire, stating that Gardner’s experience and proven dedication make her the ideal leader to guide the Dolphins toward continued excellence.
