Orange fever sweeps The Hague as World Cup anticipation builds

Residents transform Marktweg into a sea of orange, rallying behind the Dutch national team

Orange streets, orange hearts

In the heart of The Hague, the usually quiet Marktweg has been turned into a living canvas of orange, as residents drape flags, paint façades and adorn trees with the nation's signature hue ahead of the World Cup.

Organizer Danny van Dijk says the response has been overwhelmingly positive, with neighbours swapping ideas and volunteers helping to string lights and hang banners, turning the street into a spontaneous celebration of national pride.

The colour orange is more than a seasonal theme; it is a direct nod to the Dutch royal house of Oranje‑Nassau, whose name literally means "orange" in Dutch, linking the team’s nickname "Oranje" to the monarchy that has long symbolised the country’s identity.

The Netherlands will open its campaign against Japan, then face Sweden and Tunisia in the group stage, a fixture that will see members of the royal family attend the match against Sweden in Houston, adding a regal touch to the festivities.

For fans unable to travel to the United States, a modest caravan has been set up as the "Hague Orange Campsite", offering a gathering point where supporters can share meals, watch matches on portable screens and keep the orange spirit alive.

Amateur photographer Rob van Rosmalen, who has documented the transformation, praised the collective effort, noting that the street’s vibrant display reflects the power of community teamwork and shared enthusiasm.
