Rebuilding the Oregon Ducks
The Oregon Ducks baseball program is gearing up for the 2027 season amid a wave of change following the recent MLB draft. Seven prospects from the roster were selected, and while the majority have agreed to professional contracts, the team will be reshaped by new faces drawn from the transfer portal and a freshmen class.
Only one of the drafted players, right‑hander Chase Frey, will remain in Eugene. Frey, an All‑Mountain West second‑team selection and Grand Canyon transfer, has elected to return for his senior year, providing a rare anchor in an otherwise rebuilding rotation.
Notable signings and departures
The draft exodus includes names such as Ryan Cooney, who signed with the Toronto Blue Jays, and Andruw Giles, an Oregon commit that joined the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cal Scolari headed to the Chicago White Sox, Maddox Molony to the Detroit Tigers, and Miles Gosztola to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Jacob Madrid chose the New York Mets, while Sebastian Rolon signed with the Cleveland Guardians. Jack Brooks is headed to the Washington Nationals, and Collin Clarke transferred to TCU.
Pitching depth will be tested as Scolari and Gosztola exit the rotation, leaving gaps that will be filled by newcomers and the returning Frey. Will Sanford is expected to lead the staff, with Frey slotting in behind him. The program has also retained much of its pitching staff, limiting the impact of the transfer market.
Despite the turnover, coaches remain confident that the new foundation can produce a competitive squad next season. The blend of experienced returnees, strategic additions, and a focused development plan aims to restore the Ducks to contention in the Pac‑12 and beyond.
