A Strategic Stopover
Oregon State’s men’s basketball program is set to embark on an ambitious preseason tour of British Columbia this August, where the Beavers will face off against two of Canada’s most storied programs.
The itinerary includes three contests – two against the Trinity Western Spartans and a showdown with the University of Victoria Vikes – a series that not only promises competitive fire but also serves as a litmus test for a roster in flux.
At the heart of the new look is sophomore forward Josiah Lake II, the sole returning player from last season and an All‑WCC First Team selection who averaged 13.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Coach Wayne Tinkle has entrusted Lake with the dual responsibilities of leadership on the court and stability amid a wave of transfers.
The trip coincides with the arrival of ten incoming transfers and two freshmen, a reshaping that marks the beginning of Justin Joyner’s era as the team’s new floor general. Tinkle, who has guided the program for a decade, sees the Canadian swing as a crucial bonding experience for a squad that must quickly forge chemistry.
While the Vikes enter the series as perennial championship contenders, boasting nine national titles and a 22‑4 record last season that culminated in a Canada West crown, the Spartans posted a modest 12‑12 ledger in 2025‑26. Both opponents will provide contrasting challenges as Oregon State evaluates its progress before the regular season schedule is unveiled.
