The University of Oregon women’s soccer program turned a familiar corner of Central Oregon into a bustling hub of activity last week, hosting a youth camp that merged preseason conditioning with a clear mission of community engagement.
A Community‑First Pre‑Season Camp
Head coach Tracy Joyner, who has guided the Ducks for several seasons, framed the event as more than a drill session; she described it as an opportunity to plant the seeds of a broader soccer culture across the state.
For Kate Cheldelin, a junior who honed her game with Bend FC before arriving at Oregon, the camp felt like a homecoming, a chance to give back to the region that helped shape her development.
Partnerships and Participation
The collaboration with Bend FC allowed club players to attend free of charge, while non‑affiliated participants paid a modest $75 fee, proceeds from which will support the Ducks’ upcoming campaign.
Campers, many of whom traveled from nearby towns, expressed palpable excitement, citing the rare chance to train alongside Division I athletes and absorb insights from those who have already navigated the collegiate game.
Looking Ahead to a New Tradition
Looking ahead, the Ducks envision making these Central Oregon visits a recurring fixture, a plan that aligns with their season‑opening matchup scheduled for August 13 at Hillsboro Stadium against Portland State.
