Former NFL quarterback and analyst Greg McElroy has placed the Oregon Ducks' defensive line at the pinnacle of college football for the upcoming 2026 season, citing a unique blend of talent that few programs can match.
A Line Built on Experience
All four starters from the previous year return, including A'Mauri Washington, Bear Alexander, Teitum Tuioti and Matayo Uiagalelei. Washington, a first‑team All‑American in 2025, logged eight pass‑bats — the most among FBS defensive tackles — and earned a projected second‑round grade from the NFL College Advisory Committee. Tuioti recorded 9.5 sacks last season and Uiagalelei added 10.5, giving Oregon two of the nation’s top edge rushers.
McElroy notes that the Ducks boast two top‑10 edge defenders and two top‑10 interior linemen, a combination that stands alone across the country.
A New Defensive Scheme
Defensive coordinator Chris Hampton, who joined the staff this offseason, inherits a unit already lauded for its depth. He has pledged to transform the entire defense into the nation’s best, not just the line, and has already added interior depth with transfer D'Antre Robinson, who will back up Washington and Alexander.
The only lingering question involves Tony Cumberland, whose availability remains uncertain after a car accident. Nonetheless, McElroy believes the line will remain formidable, with or without Cumberland’s full participation.
If the Ducks can stay healthy, the front seven could redefine Oregon’s defensive identity and push the program back into championship contention.
