A Night of Power at Camden Yards
The Baltimore Orioles secured an 8-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Saturday night, turning a tightly contested game into a showcase of offensive firepower.
Samuel Basallo ignited the scoring with a three-run homer in the opening frame, his 14th of the season, while Gunnar Henderson’s streak of 10 consecutive games with a hit was extended with a single on the first pitch.
The Reds answered in the second inning, pulling ahead 4-3 after a two-run single by Elly De La Cruz and a clutch double from Jose Trevino that brought home Spencer Steer, followed by a tying triple from TJ Friedl.
Baltimore’s fourth inning proved decisive. The Orioles erupted for five runs against Hunter Greene, who surrendered eight hits and walked four in just 3 1/3 innings. Adley Rutschman’s second double of the night drove in two, and he later scored on Pete Alonso’s second hit, capping a rally that flipped the lead.
Starter Brandon Young turned in five solid innings, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out five, but the Orioles’ bullpen tightened the reins. Grant Wolfram induced a double play in the sixth, and Rhett Lowder followed with three scoreless frames before Tyler Wells closed it out with his second save of the season.
The win also brought recognition beyond the box score. Chase Burns and Sal Stewart were both selected to the National League All-Star team, with Stewart joining an elite list of Reds rookies to earn the honor, a group that includes Frank Robinson, Johnny Bench, Chris Sabo and Scott Williamson.
Looking ahead, the Orioles will hand the ball to Kyle Brandish on Sunday, while the Reds plan to start Nick Lodolo. Both teams hope to build on the lessons from a game that featured 19 combined runs, 27 hits and a glimpse of the star power that will shape the remainder of the season.
