A coalition of key figures from Orlando City SC is preparing to bring a professional men’s soccer club to the Space Coast, proposing an 8,000‑seat stadium just minutes from Melbourne Orlando International Airport.
The venue would sit at the heart of a mixed‑use development that blends retail, restaurants and other amenities, creating a year‑round destination for fans and visitors alike.
A new stadium for the Space Coast
The project revives a parcel of land that was once slated for Lakoona Beach, a resort‑style venture that stalled and never opened. The site’s ownership was transferred to Adëlon Capital after the Melbourne City Council approved a $8.93 million purchase of the airport‑owned property in December 2022.
Local leaders point to Brevard County’s 650,000‑strong population and its proximity to major aerospace employers — including Northrop Grumman, L3Harris, Collins Aerospace and Thales — as a demographic sweet spot for a soccer franchise. The stadium’s arrival is also expected to boost airport passenger traffic.
While the plan is still in its infancy, the Melbourne City Council is slated to vote on the final approvals, with a mid‑September deadline looming for the land‑sale closing. The outcome will determine whether the development moves forward as a soccer hub or reverts to other uses.
Florida’s soccer landscape already hosts three USL Championship clubs — Miami FC, Sporting Jax and the Tampa Bay Rowdies — providing a competitive backdrop for the new franchise. Organizers have also hinted at a future women’s team, further expanding the sport’s footprint on the Space Coast.
If realized, the venture could cement the region’s reputation as a growing sports destination while leveraging the presence of aerospace giants such as SpaceX and Blue Origin, whose corporate campuses lie nearby.
