A career defined by big plays
Orlando Watters, a former Arkansas defensive back and special‑teams standout, died on June 9 at the age of 54, prompting tributes across the college football community.
During his time in Fayetteville, Watters earned All‑SEC honors in 1992 and was a key contributor on Arkansas’ early SEC teams. He recorded 42 tackles and three interceptions as a junior, and his 71‑yard punt return for a touchdown against Tennessee proved a pivotal moment in that season.
Record‑setting returns
Watters capped his collegiate career by leading the NCAA with 185 interception return yards on six picks in 1993, and he set a program record with a 99‑yard interception return touchdown against LSU. Those performances highlighted his ability to shift momentum with a single play.
Recruited by powerhouse programs Alabama and Auburn, Watters chose Arkansas, where he also excelled academically and set state records in high school for receptions and receiving yards. His achievements earned him a place in the Calhoun County Sports Hall of Fame in 2022.
After college, Watters signed with the Seattle Seahawks, where he appeared briefly in the NFL before transitioning to other pursuits. Friends, teammates and coaches remember him not only for his athletic gifts but also for his competitive spirit and community involvement.
