The Cape Cod Women’s Soccer League match between Orleans Surf and Falmouth turned into a learning experience for a young Monomoy standout. Orleans entered the game with only ten players, a shortage caused by school commitments that left the side shorthanded from the outset.
Between the posts, Abigail Leighton, a rising senior at Monomoy, faced a relentless Falmouth attack. She recorded at least a dozen saves, keeping the score respectable as Falmouth pulled away to a 5‑1 victory.
Learning Under Pressure
What made the outing especially valuable was the caliber of opposition. The summer league is populated by players older than Leighton, many of whom have already committed to college programs, giving her a chance to test her skills against more experienced competition.
Head coach Steve Austin had to manage the game with no substitutes available, forcing several outfield players to endure nicks and bruises. Despite the makeshift lineup, Falmouth found the net through goals from Charlotte Davis, Mallory Hanson and Sarah Poulin.
Leighton said the league’s faster pace and physicality differ markedly from typical high school contests. ‘Playing with older and more experienced players helps me learn,’ she noted, adding that she is becoming more vocal and assertive on the field.
Beyond the immediate match, Leighton will split her time between halves for Monomoy in the upcoming season, a plan that makes her summer league exposure all the more critical. She also balances the league schedule with her varsity rotation alongside Olivia Eldredge, a teammate she has known since her freshman year.
Looking Ahead
The experience is already shaping her approach to leadership, and coaches expect her growth to translate into a stronger high school campaign as the new season approaches.
