Ottawa University Announces Major Coaching Staff Overhaul for 2026 Season

Promotions and new hires aim to bolster the program ahead of the upcoming campaign

Ottawa University’s head football coach Nick Davis revealed a sweeping reshuffle of the program’s coaching staff ahead of the 2026 season, naming Spencer Wheeler as offensive coordinator, Chris Edwards as special teams coordinator and Ahmad Smith as defensive coordinator.

A Strategic Move to Strengthen the Staff

Wheeler, who brings more than eleven years of coaching across multiple levels, previously served as an offensive play caller for five seasons and was a key contributor to the 2024 Big South‑OVC Conference championship team.

His extensive background includes stints that have helped shape championship‑caliber offenses, making him a natural fit to lead the team’s attacking strategy.

Smith arrives from the University of South Carolina, where he coached a defensive unit that topped the SEC in interceptions in 2022 and mentored several of the conference’s most promising backs.

Edwards, a former graduate assistant at Ottawa and alumnus of Alma College, earned Dean’s List honors before completing an MBA in Business Data Analytics, bringing both on‑field insight and analytical expertise to special teams.

The coordinated moves signal a decisive effort to sustain momentum built over recent years and to position the program for continued growth in the competitive collegiate landscape.
