OU Athletics Unveils New Game‑Day Traffic Plan for Sooners Fans

Updated driving maps and safety guidelines aim to streamline travel to Gaylord Family ahead of the September 4 season opener

New Traffic Protocols Aim to Keep Fans Moving

OU Athletics, together with the Norman Police Department and the OU Police Department, has rolled out a refreshed set of driving maps and traffic protocols for game days surrounding Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. The joint effort reflects a commitment to safety and efficiency as the football season kicks off.

Fans are encouraged to map out their routes in advance, secure parking spots early and allow ample travel time. Officials caution against relying on standard GPS navigation, which often fails to account for temporary road closures and detours that accompany large‑scale events.

Real‑time traffic updates from law enforcement should be monitored before departure and throughout the journey. With heavy volumes expected several hours before kickoff, early arrival and carpooling are strongly recommended to ease congestion and improve parking availability.

Safety remains a top priority, with reminders to stay alert for pedestrians, cyclists and traffic‑control personnel, to lock vehicle doors, keep windows up and remove valuables from sight. Avoiding railroad tracks and never attempting to crawl under stopped trains are also emphasized.

The season opener against UTEP is scheduled for Friday, September 4 at 7 p.m. at Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. While tickets for most home games remain on sale, only five of the six home matchups have inventory left, with the November 21 contest against Texas A&M already sold out.
