Draft Highlights and Roster Outlook
The University of Oklahoma’s baseball program cemented its reputation as a draft factory when eight of its standout players were selected in the 2026 Major League Baseball Draft, tying for the fifth‑most picks of any school that year. Notable selections included Brendan Brock, taken in the third round by the New York Yankees, and Jaxon Willits, who went in the fifth round to the Los Angeles Angels. Additional Sooners drafted that year were LJ Mercurius (Arizona Diamondbacks), Deiten Lachance (Cleveland Guardians), Camden Johnson and Cameron Johnson (Chicago White Sox), Mason Bixby and Nate Smithburg (Tampa Bay Rays), and several others across the later rounds.
Even as the draft concluded, the Sooners retained a core group of experienced players who announced their intention to return for the upcoming season. Pitchers Gavyn Jones and Jason Bodin, along with outfielders Dasan Harris and Jason Walk, will bolster the lineup, while relievers Brisco Smith, Kadyn Leon and Jaden Barfield add depth to the bullpen. The team also welcomed new talent through the transfer portal, including Vaughn Coleman from Cal State Northridge, who posted a .297 average with ten home runs last year, as well as Caylon Dygert and Hayes Melville from UT‑Arlington.
The most pressing question for Oklahoma heading into the fall is how it will fill the left side of the infield after the expected departures of Jaxon Willits and Camden Johnson. With those departures, the coaching staff is evaluating internal options and potential newcomers to ensure continuity on defense while maintaining the offensive firepower that helped the team compete for a national title.
Adding to the optimism, the 2026 signing class brings in promising names such as Anthony Del Angel, Jason Amalbert and Hunter Watson, who join a roster already stocked with returning starters and portal acquisitions. Together, these moves position the Sooners to defend their championship aspirations and keep the program among the nation’s elite.
