More than 200 youngsters gathered on the courts of Albuquerque’s community centers this summer, eager to learn the game and build new friendships.
The second annual Summer of Nonviolence Youth Basketball Camp was organized by the City of Albuquerque’s Albuquerque Community Safety Department in partnership with Bernalillo County, Councilor Joaquin Baca, and the Albuquerque High School Boys Basketball team.
Open to students in first through eighth grade, the free program offered daily drills, team‑building exercises and chances to interact with coaches, student‑athletes and community leaders.
Each participant received a complimentary lunch and a commemorative basketball, while mentors highlighted the importance of confidence and positive role models.
Mayor Tim Keller praised the initiative, saying it gives young people a safe space to connect, learn and grow.
Bernalillo County Commission Vice Chair Adriann Barboa added that the camp reminds youth they are supported by the broader community.
ACS Outreach Manager Jeffery Bustamante noted the value of creating positive spaces where kids can play, build relationships and receive guidance.
Albuquerque High School Varsity Boys Basketball Coach Leroy Barela expressed pride in seeing his players step up as mentors for the next generation.
A Summer of Nonviolence Across the City
The broader Summer of Nonviolence campaign continues to schedule free events throughout the season, offering safe activities that steer young people away from violence and toward constructive pursuits.
