A Legacy of Talent
The University of the Pacific has long been recognized as a breeding ground for NBA talent, having developed nine players who have stepped onto the league’s biggest stage. Their journeys from the campus in Stockton to professional courts illustrate the program’s enduring influence on basketball.
Daniss Jenkins began his collegiate career at Pacific before embarking on a professional path that included a stint with the Detroit Pistons, showcasing the university’s ability to launch guards with both skill and determination.
Jon Barry, another Pacific alumnus, carved out a versatile NBA career, contributing to several franchises such as the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers with his sharpshooting and clutch performances.
Perhaps the most celebrated product of the program is Michael Olowokandi, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft, who later helped the Los Angeles Clippers build a competitive roster during his early years in the league.
Dell Demps, John Gianelli, Bill Stricker, Keith Swagerty, Leroy Wright, and Jack Toomay round out a distinguished group of alumni. Demps contributed to the Golden State Warriors and Orlando Magic, while Gianelli was a key member of the New York Knicks’ championship squad and later played for the Portland Trail Blazers. Stricker and Swagerty each left their mark with brief but memorable NBA appearances, Wright’s college exploits at Pacific translated into a notable professional trajectory, and Toomay’s post‑college success earned him a place in the Pacific Athletics Hall of Fame.
Collectively, these nine players embody the university’s commitment to developing talent that excels at the highest level, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire future generations of basketball players.
