The event, coordinated by FlexWork Sports and backed by Alaska Airlines, Rady Children’s Health and Raising Cane’s, offered a series of drills that let Merrill throw fly balls, demonstrate proper technique and pose for photos with kids ranging from six to thirteen years old.
Rob Robinson, president of La Jolla Youth Baseball, highlighted the camp’s role in nurturing local talent, noting that the presence of a major‑league star amplified the excitement and reinforced the importance of community‑focused programming.
Parents such as Jeremy Pecoraro observed that Merrill’s commitment was evident as he stayed until the final out, personally delivering pop‑fly balls to each participant and offering encouragement that resonated with youngsters like seven‑year‑old Ashton Herdrich, who traveled from Orange County for the experience.
The camp also served as a reunion for some families, including the Pecoraro brothers — Brody, Beau and Blake — who had previously attended a similar session led by Padres infielder Jake Cronenworth, adding a layer of continuity to the local baseball culture.
Beyond the day’s fun, Merrill’s recent signing of a nine‑year, $135 million extension with the Padres underscores his long‑term vision, as he expressed a desire to remain a Padres player for life and to help grow both the team and the surrounding community.
