A Day of Play and Purpose
Jackson Merrill, the San Diego Padres’ centerfielder, transformed Cliffridge Park in La Jolla into a vibrant baseball playground for more than 300 children aged six to thirteen. The camp, organized by FlexWork, paired professional athletes with youngsters for a series of batting, pitching and fielding drills that turned a simple Saturday into a memorable experience for the participants.
The event was made possible through the sponsorship of Dexcom, a leader in continuous glucose monitoring. Families managing Type 1 diabetes were invited to attend, allowing them to share a day of normalcy and excitement. Danilo Camacho and his sister Sarah arrived with their brother, who lives with diabetes, while Jessica Silldorff brought her six‑year‑old son Wesley, whose birthday coincided with Merrill’s own April birthday, adding a personal touch to the celebration.
Merrill emphasized that the camp’s core mission was to provide fun and distraction for children confronting health challenges. By focusing on play rather than pressure, he created an environment where young athletes could forget their worries and simply enjoy the game. The children were divided into age groups and guided through twelve stations that tested various baseball skills, each run by volunteer coaches and players.
For James Stech, a six‑year‑old member of the Tecolote Youth Baseball All‑Star team, meeting Merrill was a highlight of the day. James, who idolizes Merrill’s home‑run power, wore his team hat proudly and expressed awe at the chance to swing a bat alongside his baseball hero. The interaction underscored the camp’s ability to inspire the next generation of players.
FlexWork’s role in connecting professional athletes with community youth programs was evident throughout the event. The organization’s mission to bridge the gap between elite sport and local development shone as Merrill, a rising star, gave his time freely, reinforcing the notion that success on the field can translate into meaningful off‑field impact.
