A fresh start in Provo
Paki Finau, a transfer offensive lineman from Washington, arrived at Brigham Young University with a clear goal: to earn a starting spot on the Cougars’ offensive line. During preseason training, he impressed coaches enough to claim the left tackle position, a testament to his adaptability and physical readiness.
Versatility as a competitive edge
Finau’s skill set extends beyond a single position. He can slide between right tackle, left tackle, right guard, and left guard, giving the Cougars flexibility in formations and matchups. His ability to shift roles seamlessly has been highlighted by coaches as a strategic advantage.
Motivation rooted in family and mental health
The decision to leave Washington was driven not only by athletic opportunity but also by personal considerations. Finau cited mental‑health benefits and proximity to his family, who reside in West Valley City, as key factors in his commitment to BYU.
A background beyond the gridiron
Off the field, Finau embraces a creative side, playing guitar, ukulele, trumpet, tuba, and piano. Growing up in California, he learned about the celebrated golfer Tony Finau, though the two share no familial connection.
Recruitment roots
Out of high school, Finau attracted interest from several power programs, including Miami, Penn State, and Oregon, before narrowing his choices to BYU and Utah. A visit to the BYU campus sealed his decision, and he later experienced the College Football Playoff national championship game as a four‑star recruit at Washington.
