Jonathan Simmons, the head coach of Palisades High School’s football team, has been suspended with pay just weeks before the 2026 season is set to begin. The suspension was announced by Principal Erik Olejarczyk, who emphasized the district’s commitment to maintaining stability within the program.
The pause comes at a time of optimism for the program. Palisades returns 11 starters from the previous year, including three all‑conference selections — Cole Hough, Nick Rankin and Ephraim Holmes — and is currently ranked No. 8 in The Observer’s Sweet 16 regional poll and No. 20 in the statewide Super 25 rankings.
A season of high expectations
When Palisades opened its doors in 2022, Simmons inherited a program with modest results, posting records of 2‑9 and 3‑7 in his first two seasons. By 2024 and 2025, he guided the team to consecutive 8‑4 finishes, establishing a culture of competitiveness that has drawn regional attention.
Interim leadership
Defensive coordinator Darrel Wilson, who previously starred at Hunter Huss High School in Gastonia during the 1990s, will serve as interim head coach during Simmons’s suspension. Wilson’s deep roots in the area and his defensive expertise were cited as key reasons for promoting him from within.
In a letter to families, Principal Erik Olejarczyk reassured parents that the school remains focused on continuity and excellence, stating that the program’s momentum will be preserved despite the temporary leadership change.
