Palm Beach State College Chooses Smaller Soccer Stadium Over Grand Arena After Fee Dispute

The revised $50‑60 million project aims to leverage FIFA World Cup momentum while addressing transparency concerns.

A more modest stadium wins board approval

Palm Beach State College (PBSC) has scrapped a sweeping $360 million arena proposal from Oak View Group after the developer failed to settle a $25,000 filing fee, a hurdle that proved decisive in the college’s final decision.

Instead, the college green‑lighted a more modest plan from Palm Beach Sports Management for a 6,000‑ to 8,000‑seat soccer stadium that will be built on 10 to 12 acres of the Lake Worth Beach campus’s southeast corner. The project, priced between $50 million and $60 million, will be privately financed and is slated for completion by the end of 2027, just in time for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The new venue will share the campus with the SoFi Center, the college’s existing professional‑sports facility that houses the TGL indoor golf league, and will also serve as the home ground for the United Soccer League’s Palm Beach County club, founded by Palm Beach Sports in 2023. In addition to league play, the stadium is expected to host nearly 100 concerts and other events each year.

Board member Dave Kerner voiced reservations, citing concerns that the accelerated timeline and limited public scrutiny could expose the college to legal challenges under state transparency statutes. His dissent underscores a broader debate over how the institution balances ambitious sports ambitions with accountability.

Palm Beach Sports Management is backed by a quartet of investors — Nacho Figueres, Michael Cohen, Natalie Grainger and Peer T. Pederson, Jr. — who bring diverse experience from soccer, finance and entertainment to the project.
