Panthers Doubleheader Delivers Drama at Goerke Park
Goerke Park in Stevens Point became the stage for a doubleheader that combined two of Wisconsin’s favorite fall traditions: high school soccer and football. The event drew families, alumni and local supporters eager to see the SPASH Panthers compete against familiar rivals.
In the soccer match, the Homestead Hawks opened the scoring on a penalty kick before SPASH answered with a goal from Sebastian Nelson, leveling the contest early. The Hawks, however, pulled ahead in the second half with two additional goals, sealing a 3‑1 victory that left the Panthers searching for answers.
The football game followed on Military Appreciation Night, pitting SPASH against the New Richmond Rockets. A Trent Breitbach touchdown gave the Panthers an early 14‑7 lead, but New Richmond answered with a 66‑yard strike that shifted momentum decisively in their favor.
New Richmond’s offense continued to surge, adding multiple scores that culminated in a 48‑14 final tally. The lopsided result underscored the Rockets’ dominance on the night and left the Panthers with a steep climb to close the gap.
Beyond the scores, the doubleheader highlighted community spirit, honoring military families while showcasing emerging talent from both programs. Fans left the park eager for the next matchup, confident that the rivalry will continue to fuel excitement throughout the season.
