A New Coaching Era
The Spartans have entered their first training camp under head coach Pat Fitzgerald, marking a pivotal moment for a program that has not reached a bowl game since 2021.
With a roster that now includes 50 new faces — transfers, freshmen and returning players — the competition for starting spots has become the central narrative of the camp.
At wide receiver, Chrishon McCray has locked down one of the three starting positions, while KK Smith, Fred Moore, Charles Taplin and Rodney Bullard battle for the remaining two slots.
The right tackle spot is wide open, with Rakeem Johnson and Robert Wright vying for the role now that Conner Moore has shifted to left guard.
On the defensive line, the strong‑side end position is contested among Keahnist Thompson, Cal Thrush and Kekai Burnett, while the rush ends have already been claimed by Kenny Soares and Anelu Lafaele.
The kicking game also features a duel between Liam Boyd, a Charlotte transfer, and true freshman Stephen Gonzales, each looking to secure the job.
Coach Fitzgerald emphasizes that the depth of competition across the board will shape the team’s identity and could accelerate the Spartans’ push toward a postseason berth.
