A New Era for Middlebury Defense
Middlebury College has named Patrick Madden as its new assistant football coach, tasked with working directly with the inside linebackers and elevating the program’s defensive unit.
Madden arrives after a two‑year stint as defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Norwich University, where he helped guide safety Shayne Leddy to the 2024 Defender of the Nation Award.
A Proven Track Record
During his tenure at Norwich, the defense led the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference in passing yards allowed per game, posting a season average of 133.3 yards.
The unit also ranked among the nation’s best in several categories, including a 179.6 yards‑per‑game allowance from 2019 through 2021, and produced multiple all‑conference selections.
A Journey Through College Football
Madden’s coaching career spans several institutions, including Elon University, Tufts, Benedictine University, and the Omaha Nighthawks, where he honed his expertise on both sides of the ball.
At Boston College, he contributed to back‑to‑back ACC Atlantic Division titles, and his earlier work at Wesleyan University culminated in a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies in 1999.
Beyond college ranks, Madden has also served in leadership roles at Lawrence Academy and the University of New Hampshire, further diversifying his experience across New England and the Midwest.
