A strategic addition to the Cougars' bench
Patrick Mutombo, a seasoned coach with deep roots in both the NBA and international basketball, has accepted an assistant position on BYU’s men’s basketball staff. His arrival signals a fresh infusion of championship experience and global perspective into the program.
Mutombo’s playing days at Metro State University laid the foundation for his career. There he captured two NCAA Division II titles, earned RMAC Player of the Year honors, and later received induction into the Metro State Athletic Hall of Fame, a testament to his competitive drive and leadership.
His coaching trajectory includes stints with the Denver Nuggets, the Austin Spurs, and the Toronto Raptors, where he contributed to the 2019 championship run that overcame the Golden State Warriors in a six‑game series. He also guided the Raptors 905 to back‑to‑back division titles, establishing the franchise’s most successful records in organization history.
Beyond club success, Mutombo has shaped national teams, serving as an assistant for USA Basketball during the 2023 World Cup qualifiers and leading the squad to a 3‑1 record. He later helmed the Americans at the 2025 FIBA AmeriCup, securing a bronze medal with a 4‑2 finish.
The 2024‑25 season saw him on the bench of the Memphis Grizzlies, where his defensive schemes helped the team finish 48‑34 and clinch the eighth seed in the playoffs. His work with top talents such as Kawhi Leonard, Devin Booker, and Giannis Antetokounmpo underscores his ability to develop elite players.
What the Cougars gain
Mutombo’s blend of NBA pedigree, international tournament experience, and proven player development offers BYU a rare advantage. His defensive acumen and emphasis on disciplined play are expected to elevate the Cougars’ competitiveness in the West Coast Conference and beyond.
Fans can anticipate a seamless integration of his expertise into practice routines and game preparation, as the staff looks to translate his championship habits into everyday culture. The move also reinforces BYU’s commitment to recruiting and retaining top coaching talent.
