The University of BYU announced Monday that Patrick Mutombo will join the men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant under head coach Kevin Young. The addition marks a strategic move to infuse the program with a depth of professional and international experience.
A Wealth of Championship Experience
Mutombo’s coaching résumé includes a championship ring from the 2019 Toronto Raptors title run and tenures with the Memphis Grizzlies, Milwaukee Bucks, and Raptors 905. At the latter, he helped shape the development of future NBA stars such as Kawhi Leonard, Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, and Giannis Antetokounmpo, while also guiding the team to division records and playoff success.
His international footprint extends to USA Basketball, where he contributed to a 3‑1 record in World Cup qualifying and a bronze medal at the 2025 FIBA Men’s AmeriCup. He also served as an assistant during the tournament, further cementing his reputation on the global stage.
Before transitioning to the bench, Mutombo enjoyed a standout playing career at Metro State College in Denver, capturing two NCAA Division II national championships and earning RMAC Player of the Year in 2002. He later played professionally overseas in Italy and in the NBA Development League with the Bakersfield Jam.
Born in Kinshasa, Zaire, Mutombo brings a unique blend of cultural perspective and competitive drive to Provo. His appointment is expected to elevate the Cougars’ recruiting reach and on‑court development, aligning with Young’s vision of a program that competes at the highest level of collegiate basketball.
