Patuxent High School’s field hockey team concluded the 2025 season as runners‑up in the Southern Maryland Athletic Conference, falling to Leonardtown in the championship match, and secured a spot among the final four of the 1A state tournament after a quarterfinal victory and a narrow semifinal defeat.
Building a Culture of Resilience
Coach Lynn Powell views the campaign as a success, noting that the experience will shape the club’s ambitions for 2026, even as the roster loses several defensive stalwarts and the squad’s size limits depth.
The program’s philosophy centers on self‑belief, teamwork and the willingness to fail forward, encouraging athletes to take risks and learn from mistakes to build confidence on and off the field.
Freshmen and sophomores are expected to step into leadership roles early, a shift that reflects the team’s commitment to developing talent from within and mitigating the impact of departing seniors.
Although many players will not continue field hockey at the collegiate level, the lessons of competition and collective effort are intended to prepare them for life beyond high school, while the team sets its sights on contending for a state championship in the coming season.
