A Legacy Reborn
Paul Moran, a name that resonates through the Northeastern Conference, has left Marblehead High after eight seasons of leading the girls basketball program to a 99‑68 record, and is now stepping back onto the sidelines of Swampscott High’s boys team.
The move marks a homecoming for Moran, who first coached the Swampscott boys squad two decades ago before spending years at Danvers, Saugus and other nearby schools, building a reputation that stretches back five decades across the league.
Beyond wins and losses, Moran still holds the Swampscott boys scoring record of 2,043 career points, a testament to his offensive prowess that he now hopes to pass on to a new generation.
His decision to return was driven as much by personal ties as by professional ambition; his son Matt Moran, an eighth‑grade math teacher and former freshman coach, will be on the bench, while Superintendent Jason Calichman, Principal Emily Zotto and Athletic Director Kelly Wolff are credited with cultivating a positive culture in Swampscott.
Moran has spoken admiringly of Mike Giardi, a longtime coach and math department head at Marblehead High, and has praised the support of athletic directors Greg Ceglarski, Kent Wheeler and Mark Tarmey during his tenure there.
While he will continue to cheer for the other NEC towns where he once coached, Moran says he will do so only when they are not facing Swampscott, a stance that underscores his deep connection to the conference and his new allegiance.
