Paul Moran Returns to Swampscott High as Head Coach of Big Blue Boys Basketball

A decorated alumnus with 2,000 career points steps back onto the sidelines to rebuild the program and foster community spirit.

Paul Moran, a Swampscott High School alumnus who once towered over the court with more than 2,000 points in the mid‑1980s, is set to return to the school in a new capacity. The Big Blue boys basketball program will now be led by Moran, who brings a quarter‑century of coaching experience, including a recent stint as head coach of the girls varsity team at Marblehead High School.

A Homecoming for a Basketball Legend

The appointment follows the resignation of Jason Knowles in March, opening the door for Moran’s homecoming. Athletic Director Kelly Wolff highlighted Moran’s deep understanding of the school’s culture and his proven ability to motivate student‑athletes.

Moran expressed enthusiasm about the opportunity, stating that his goal is to build the character of the roster while strengthening school and community spirit. He will be joined by his son, Matt Moran, who will take charge of the freshman boys team.

Beyond the X’s and O’s, Moran plans to work closely with the school’s athletic department to foster a competitive yet supportive environment. His vision emphasizes teamwork, discipline, and a lasting connection between the program and the broader Swampscott community.
