Palm Beach State College (PBSC) has chosen a smaller, professional‑soccer‑oriented stadium over a larger indoor arena that would have housed luxury boxes, minor‑league hockey and a full‑scale concert venue.
Why the arena plan fell short
The decision came after Oak View Group (OVG) withdrew a $360 million proposal that called for a 10,000‑seat arena on the Lake Worth Beach campus, a plan that faltered because the developer failed to submit the required $25,000 filing fee, whereas Palm Beach Sports Management promptly paid it.
Palm Beach Sports Management, the owner of the United Soccer League’s Palm Beach County team and a consortium that includes Nacho Figueres, Michael Cohen, Natalie Grainger and financier Peer T. Pederson, Jr., won approval for a $50 million to $60 million privately funded soccer venue.
The new stadium will sit on 10 to 12 acres of the campus’s southeast section, leased for an initial 50‑year term with two optional 25‑year extensions, and will host both professional and collegiate soccer matches as well as college‑wide events such as graduation ceremonies.
Board member Dave Kerner had opposed the OVG proposal on three separate votes, warning that the project could expose the college to legal risks under state transparency statutes; PBSC’s legal counsel later confirmed that all procedural requirements had been met, effectively dismissing Kerner’s objections.
Construction is slated for completion by 2027, a timeline that aligns with the excitement generated by the upcoming FIFA World Cup, allowing the venue to ride the wave of heightened soccer interest in the United States.
Beyond soccer, the facility is expected to serve as a multi‑purpose hub, providing a modern space for university functions and community gatherings, while the private financing model reduces reliance on public funds.
