The Pittsburgh Penguins have locked in a long-term commitment to one of their most promising forwards, signing Ville Koivunen to an eight-year contract that guarantees him $4 million each season through the 2033-34 NHL campaign.
A Contract That Extends Beyond a Decade
At 23 years old, Koivunen arrives as a player who has already demonstrated the ability to dominate both the NHL and the AHL. In the 2025-26 season he split time between Pittsburgh and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, posting 41 points in 34 top-level appearances while continuing to rack up production in the minors.
His offensive output has been consistent throughout his early professional career. Over 109 AHL games he has accumulated 98 points, and his 1.21 points-per-game average in the recent season placed him second on the team in scoring. The forward also earned AHL Player of the Month honors in February 2026 after a stretch in which he recorded 16 points.
International experience adds another layer to his résumé. Koivunen helped Finland capture silver at the 2022 World Junior Championship and served as an alternate captain the following year, showcasing his leadership on the world stage.
Drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2021, the forward was traded to Pittsburgh on March 7, 2024, and the new contract reflects the club’s confidence that he will continue to develop into a cornerstone of their attack. The move also signals a strategic decision to retain a home-grown talent who brings a blend of skill, work ethic, and international pedigree.
