The Pittsburgh Penguins announced an eight-year, $4 million average annual value contract for forward Ville Koivunen, a deal that represents the longest commitment permitted under the NHL’s current collective bargaining agreement.
Koivunen, 23, arrived in Pittsburgh as part of the trade that sent Jake Guentzel to the Carolina Hurricanes at the 2024 trade deadline, adding a young, high-upside forward to the roster.
Although his NHL résumé consists of just two goals and 14 points in 47 games over the past two seasons, Koivunen has been a dominant force in the AHL, posting 34 goals and 96 points in 97 appearances for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Strategic Implications
The contract reflects the Penguins’ strategy as the league’s salary cap is projected to rise, positioning the deal as both a potential cornerstone for a future contender and a valuable asset should the team decide to explore trade options.
General manager Ron Hextall emphasized the organization’s belief in Koivunen’s upside, noting that the eight-year term provides stability while the player continues to develop toward his projected NHL impact.
