Matt Campbell, the head coach of Penn State’s football program, recently made a striking decision: he reduced the square footage of his own office to carve out a meeting room exclusively for the special teams unit.
The move was more than symbolic; it addressed a long‑standing deficiency. For years the special teams group had been forced to study film in whatever empty classroom or hallway they could find, a situation that underscored how the unit was often treated as an afterthought.
When the players learned that the head coach had given up part of his workspace, their reaction was immediate. Kicker Ryan Barker described the news as “unexpected,” while long snapper Tyler Duzansky, who later signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, recalled the moment as a clear signal that the coaching staff valued every facet of the game.
The new space quickly became a hub of preparation. Punter Gabe Nwosu, who finished the season with the Big Ten’s second‑best average of 46.03 yards per punt, said the dedicated room allowed the unit to fine‑tune techniques that had previously been compromised by cramped quarters.

Coordinator Justin Lustig, who oversees the unit, called the new meeting room “a symbol of humility” and emphasized that the gesture reinforced the message that special teams are integral to the team’s overall success. He noted that the environment fostered a sense of ownership and accountability among the players.
Beyond the statistics, Campbell’s action sent a broader message about player development. By allocating resources to a group that often flies under the radar, the coach highlighted a pathway for athletes to showcase their skills to NFL scouts, a factor that contributed to the unit’s heightened visibility and confidence.
