Penn State Nittany Lions Open Season with 45-0 Shutout over Marshall, Yet Rushing Woes Remain

A dominant defensive performance and a prolific passing attack under new head coach Matt Campbell set a strong tone, but the team’s ground game and backfield depth raise questions as the season unfolds.

Season Opener Dominance

The Penn State Nittany Lions opened their season with a commanding 45-0 victory over Marshall, delivering the program’s first shutout under head coach Matt Campbell since 1915.

Quarterback Rocco Becht, making his debut, completed 13 of 18 passes for 271 yards and four touchdowns, posting a passer rating of 272, while the Marshall defense, focused on stopping the run, left ample space for the Nittany Lions’ aerial attack.

Wide receiver Koby Howard also shined, hauling in six receptions for 161 yards and a touchdown, becoming the first Penn State wideout to reach 150 receiving yards since 2022.

On the defensive side, defensive end Caleb Bacon made a strong impression with six tackles, three for loss, and a sack, earning increased playing time and prompting defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn to line him up at defensive tackle in third‑down situations.

The ground game, however, lagged, with the team averaging just 3.6 yards per carry; running back Quinton Martin Jr. managed only 38 yards on 10 attempts, and the combined effort of Carson Hansen and James Peoples produced a modest 79 rushing yards on 19 carries, underscoring concerns about depth at the position.

Coach Campbell praised the overall performance but emphasized that improving the rushing attack and adding more talent behind the starters will be essential as the season progresses, noting that the depth chart includes players such as Savon Huggins, Brett Eskildsen, Chase Sowell, Zay Robinson, Ben Brahmer and others.
