A Recruiting Setback
The commitment of three-star cornerback Zachary Gleason to West Virginia marks the latest reversal in Penn State's 2027 recruiting haul. Gleason had pledged to the Nittany Lions in March but changed his mind after a campus visit to Morgantown, a move that follows the earlier flip of Semajay Robinson to Virginia.
A standout at Pittsburgh Central Catholic, Gleason finished his junior season with 28 tackles, three interceptions, a sack and a forced fumble, drawing interest from a dozen programs before deciding. His list of suitors included Boston College, Cal, Cincinnati, Indiana, Kentucky, Liberty, Michigan State and North Carolina, among others.
The back-to-back losses leave Penn State with just 20 verbal commitments for the Class of 2027, a modest number as the staff continues to shape the roster. Head coach Matt Campbell has been vocal about a cultural transformation that places players at the center of decision-making.
Campbell’s player-led philosophy has resonated with prospects like Rocco Becht, who says alignment with team goals is essential for competing in big games. The approach reflects a broader shift that could influence how future recruits perceive the program.
While the departure of Gleason narrows the pool of cornerback targets, the staff still holds offers from several other schools, leaving flexibility to fill the remaining spots. The evolving class illustrates both the challenges and opportunities that come with a dynamic recruiting landscape.
