Penn State’s New Coach Weaves Legacy into First Season

Matt Campbell blends tradition with modern standards as the program honors its history and community ties

When Matt Campbell assumed the role of head coach in December, he set out to honor Penn State’s storied football lineage while forging a forward‑looking identity. His first season has been marked by a series of deliberate gestures that tie the present roster to the program’s historic narrative.

Legacy Meets New Direction

Campbell has made it a priority to reconnect the team with former players spanning every decade from the 1950s through the 2020s. Legends such as Pro Football Hall of Famer Dave Robinson, national champions Todd Blackledge and D.J. Dozier, as well as NaVorro Bowman, have returned for Letterman weekends, participating in coaching sessions and sharing their experiences with current athletes.

On the staff side, Campbell retained veteran assistants Terry Smith and Dan Connor, while adding defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn to the mix. He also appointed Jordan Hill as director of the Penn State Football Letterman’s Club and brought in Michael Mauti as director of football engagement, reinforcing the program’s commitment to alumni involvement and community outreach.

The season opener paid tribute to Dr. Wayne Sebastianelli, who served as director of athletic medicine for 32 years, with a helmet sticker and a moment of silence, underscoring the coach’s belief that honoring individual legacies fuels collective success. In addition, the newly opened Paterno Family Football Experience Room celebrates the historical contributions that have shaped the program.

At Big Ten Media Day, Campbell reiterated the program’s ‘Success With Honor’ standard, a principle he first highlighted during his tenure. Sue Paterno’s appearance at the event reinforced the message, as she described the team’s welcoming and respectful atmosphere, emphasizing that the culture of honor extends beyond the field.
