A Pennsylvania high school football program finds itself at the center of a criminal investigation after a series of alleged assaults on a 15‑year‑old teammate.
The incidents, which occurred in August and September 2025, involved multiple players using a broomstick and cleats to attack the victim, leaving him with bruises and a contusion to a sensitive area.
Escalation and Coaching Oversight
According to investigators, the first attack on August 15 saw several teammates restrain the boy while another poked him with a broomstick. No coaches were present at that time.
A month later, on September 3, Isaiah Simpson, an 18‑year‑old senior, allegedly kicked and stomped on the victim, who curled into a ball to protect his head. The assault continued with kicks to the groin and blows to the head delivered by cleats.
Four other players have been charged, though their identities remain protected because they are juveniles. The case also led to charges against two adults: Josiah Peeler for false swearing and volunteer coach Ralph Burnley, who reported the incident to head coach Terence Tolbert.
Coaches’ Response
Head coach Terence Tolbert, 55, along with assistant coaches Darian “DJ” McFadden and Benjamin Johnson III, learned of the second attack after Burnley informed them. Rather than involving law enforcement, the staff opted to address the matter internally.
Tolbert, McFadden and Johnson are alleged to have instructed the victim not to disclose the abuse to his mother, promising that the situation would be handled within the team.
The victim’s mother discovered the second assault through a relative, prompting a hospital visit where doctors documented the injuries. School officials later learned of the allegations via an anonymous reporting app and promptly contacted police.
Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele emphasized that the conduct constituted criminal assault, rejecting any notion that it was merely “goofing around” among teammates.
In the wake of the investigation, school administrators canceled the remainder of the football season and placed the program under scrutiny as the legal process unfolds.
