German football’s governing body confirmed on Thursday that Per Mertesacker will assume the position of sporting director, a move that culminates a lengthy succession discussion within the federation.
A New Chapter for German Football
DFB president Bernd Neuendorf said the talks had been ongoing for a year and a half and expressed confidence that Mertesacker’s comprehensive understanding of the game would strengthen the federation’s strategic vision.
Mertesacker’s playing career, which spanned more than two decades, included 104 caps for Germany and a decisive role in the country’s 2014 World Cup triumph, where he featured in six matches. He began his professional journey at Hannover 96 before establishing himself at Werder Bremen and later Arsenal, where he amassed 228 appearances.
During his fifteen‑year association with Arsenal, Mertesacker transitioned from player to academy manager, overseeing the development of emerging talents such as Bukayo Saka, Emile Smith Rowe and Ethan Nwaneri, who have become cornerstones of the club’s recent successes.
Mertesacker is set to depart Arsenal at the conclusion of the 2025‑26 season and will formally join the federation’s leadership later this year, a timeline that aligns with the organization’s ambition to blend tradition with forward‑looking strategy.
