Pete Furey, a Niskayuna native and former player, has been appointed varsity football coach, succeeding Brian Grastorf, who stepped down to devote more time to his family. John Furey, Pete’s father, will serve as one of his assistant coaches, bringing a family legacy to the program.
A Legacy of Success
The team has enjoyed a remarkable run, capturing its third Section 2 Class A title in November with a 28‑6 victory over Troy and adding Super Bowl wins over Averill Park in both 2022 and 2023. Those achievements have set a high bar for the upcoming season.
In 2026 the program will move up to Class AA, facing larger, faster, and stronger opponents. The first test will be a matchup against perennial power Shaker, a game that promises to showcase the team’s new level of competition.
Building the Next Generation
Mike Grasso, the 2025 Times Union Offensive Player of the Year, has taken his talents to the University at Albany, leaving a void that will be filled by sophomore Joey DiPiazza, who made a splash on the recent title team. The offense will look to DiPiazza to continue the program’s momentum.
Furey says he is excited to create a culture that uses football as a vehicle for young men to grow, emphasizing character development alongside athletic achievement. The coaching staff and school officials are confident that this blend of tradition and new ambition will keep the program thriving.
