A Court Named for a Mentor
A new basketball court is rising in Wichita Falls, Texas, as a tribute to Larry Nash, a longtime advocate for foster youth. The project, led by the nonprofit Phased In, aims to transform a simple court into a sanctuary where young adults who have aged out of the foster care system can gather, play and build community.
Larry Nash, remembered as Coach Nash, spent years directing the Martin Luther King Center in Wichita Falls and became a father figure to many. His legacy as a role model and community leader continues to inspire the organization’s mission.
Each year roughly 1,200 to 1,500 Texas youths exit the foster system, entering adulthood without the safety net many take for granted. The court’s design reflects a commitment to provide a supportive space that addresses the unique challenges faced by these young adults.
Beyond the Court
Phased In envisions expanding from this court to other multipurpose recreational venues that raise awareness for the organization and provide additional outlets for mentorship, workshops and youth leagues. Fundraising efforts are already underway, with community partners contributing to complete the court and to fund future spaces.
The organization currently operates three campuses statewide, offering a home and support to youth as they turn 18. By weaving sport and recreation into its services, Phased In hopes to create lasting pathways for former foster youth to thrive.
