A 68‑year‑old Springfield resident was killed on Saturday after a collision on a South Jersey highway involving a Tesla driver. The crash claimed the life of Phil Eastman, a figure who had shaped the town’s athletic and civic landscape for decades.
Eastman spent nearly three decades at the helm of Springfield High School’s hockey program, overseeing 28 seasons of play and serving as varsity head coach for 17 of those years. His dedication to the sport helped launch the careers of many student‑athletes who went on to compete at the collegiate level.
Beyond the rink, Eastman was a mentor to countless young players, a longtime employee of Exelon and PECO who retired after 44 years, and a devoted husband and father. His wife, Maureen, and their children all wore Springfield jerseys, underscoring the family’s deep roots in the community.
The Springfield School District issued a statement expressing its condolences, highlighting Eastman’s unwavering commitment to public education and civic involvement. The district also noted that his first meeting as a newly appointed School Board member had been scheduled for the upcoming Thursday.
