The Philadelphia Catholic League secured its fourth Carpenter Cup championship on Monday, defeating Delaware County by a 5-0 margin in a game that showcased the league’s depth and poise.
A milestone for the Catholic League
Connor Clark, a rising senior at Cardinal O’Hara, sparked the offense with a ground ball in the second inning that brought home Caden Vacca, and later added a bloop single in the fourth that set up Kaden Cortez’s RBI double.
The league’s pitching staff, featuring Brady Sell and John LaSpada to start, combined with a strong closing effort from Jake Gorman, who tossed 1.2 scoreless innings and recorded three strikeouts without allowing a hit.
Delco’s bats never found rhythm, managing only two singles from Nick Corse and an unnamed hitter as the Catholic League’s arms kept the pressure on throughout.
Austin and Blake Havertine, who had previously reached the semifinals and experienced the atmosphere of Citizens Bank Park, expressed disappointment at the loss but highlighted the value of playing together in the tournament.
The victory marks the league’s first title since 2005, underscoring the growing competitiveness of Catholic school baseball in the region.
