A Community‑Driven Soccer Experience
Young athletes from across the region have gathered at the WSFS Bank Sportsplex in Chester to take part in a summer soccer program that blends skill development with a love of the game. The initiative, now in its second week, provides a structured environment where participants can refine their techniques while enjoying the camaraderie of team play.
The program is the result of a collaboration between the Philadelphia Union and Widener University, combining the Union’s professional expertise with Widener’s academic resources. Over six weeks, twelve practice sessions will be held, each designed to introduce tactical concepts and foster a competitive yet supportive atmosphere.
Adding an international dimension, members of Ivory Coast’s national team have visited the camp to share insights and experiences from the global stage. Their presence has sparked excitement among the participants, who appreciate the chance to learn from players who compete at the highest level.
Beyond technical drills, the curriculum emphasizes safety, fun and inclusivity. Coaches have tailored activities to accommodate players of varying skill levels, ensuring that each participant can progress at a comfortable pace while still being challenged.
The summer schedule will culminate in a tournament at the end of July, giving teams an opportunity to showcase their growth in front of families, coaches and community members. This final event is expected to draw significant local interest and highlight the collaborative spirit of the program.
WSFS Bank, after which the sportsplex is named, continues to support community initiatives that promote health and youth development. Their involvement underscores a broader commitment to investing in the next generation of athletes and leaders.
