The Philadelphia Union has kicked off its Soccer in Schools program, a new effort to spread the sport across the Greater Philadelphia region. The initiative equips schools with curriculum materials, teacher training, gear and chances for students to play.
Community‑wide soccer outreach
At Thomas Holme Elementary, Union youth coaches ran a series of drills and games, guiding children through ball‑control exercises and small‑sided matches that sparked smiles and growing confidence on the field.
Coach Lucas Milazzo watched the youngsters light up as they learned new skills, noting that the energy in the gym was palpable and that each session built a stronger belief in their abilities.
Andy Vanover, senior director of Union Youth, said the launch marks a milestone for the club’s community work, emphasizing that the program will touch thousands of kids and help shape the next generation of players.
Organizers set an ambitious target: reaching 32,000 students in the first year and ultimately influencing up to 500,000 youngsters throughout the region, a scale that reflects the Union’s commitment to grassroots growth.
