The Philadelphia Union announced this week that they have reacquired veteran left back Kai Wagner from Birmingham City, sealing a deal that runs through the 2028‑29 campaign with an option for 2029‑30. The German international will also occupy a Designated Player slot on the Union’s roster, a move that underscores the club’s intent to blend experience with top‑level talent.
A Strategic Reinforcement
Wagner’s return marks the completion of a full‑circle story that began when he first arrived in Philadelphia in 2019. Over seven seasons he helped the Union capture two Supporters’ Shields, earned three MLS All‑Star selections and twice made the MLS Best XI. In total he logged 253 appearances, contributing 10 goals and 54 assists while becoming a fan favourite and a cornerstone of the club’s defensive stability.
After a brief stint in the English second tier, where he tallied a goal and three assists in 18 appearances for Birmingham City, Wagner expressed enthusiasm about coming back to a city that has shaped his career. “Philadelphia has always felt like home,” he said in a club interview, noting the city’s significance for both him and his family.
Sporting director Jon Scheer highlighted Wagner’s integral role, stating that his blend of defensive reliability and attacking flair will be vital as the Union aim to remain competitive in the Eastern Conference. “Kai’s experience and winning pedigree align perfectly with our ambitions,” Scheer added, while interim head coach Ryan Richter welcomed the reinforcement ahead of the post‑World Cup schedule.
The Union are set to resume MLS action on July 22 against Red Bull New York, marking their first competitive match after the league’s mid‑season break. With Wagner now in the fold, the team hopes to translate his familiarity with the club’s culture into immediate on‑field impact.
