The African American Museum in Philadelphia is set to host a free, family‑friendly celebration of Black baseball history on Saturday, July 11.
The program, designed for visitors of all ages, will feature a presentation on the pioneering Pythian Base Ball Club, a screening of the documentary The Other Boys of Summer, and a conversation with its director Lauren Meyer and special guest Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.
A Day of History and Film
The documentary, directed by Lauren Meyer, weaves personal narratives with broader social currents, illuminating how segregation shaped the sport and the lives of its players.
Following the film, Meyer will sit down with Bob Kendrick, whose museum preserves the stories of Negro League athletes, for a conversation that promises to bridge past and present.
Attendees can also join guided tours of the exhibit “A League Apart” led by Brian Michael, founder of Phillies Nation and co‑owner of Shibe Vintage Sports, and take part in hands‑on art‑making activities that echo the spirit of the Negro Leagues.
Organizers say the event aims to connect families, baseball enthusiasts, history lovers and lifelong learners with the enduring legacy of the Negro Leagues, offering a vibrant mix of education and creativity.
