The Rochester Americans announced Thursday that former NHL defenseman Philip Samuelsson will join their coaching staff as an assistant, bringing a 15‑year professional playing résumé to the organization.
A Journey From the Draft to the Pros
Selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round of the 2009 draft, Samuelsson went on to log nearly 900 games across the NHL and AHL, including 13 appearances for the Penguins and eight for the Arizona Coyotes before retiring in 2019. His college years at Boston College culminated in a national championship in 2010, and he also represented Team USA on the international stage.
After leaving North America, Samuelsson showcased his versatility in four European leagues, notably in the Swedish Hockey League and the Deutsche Eishockey Liga, before returning to the United States to hang up his skates.
Legacy and Family Influence
Samuelsson’s hiring follows a lineage of hockey excellence; his father, Ulf Samuelsson, spent 16 seasons in the NHL and later contributed as an assistant coach. The younger Samuelsson’s transition from player to coach is further enriched by his experience mentoring younger talent and his deep understanding of the game’s evolving dynamics.
The coaching roster now includes veteran Scott Moser, who replaces Vinny Prospal, and Nathan Paetsch, who previously held the assistant role before moving on to the Youngstown Phantoms. Together with head coach Mike Leone, the staff aims to blend fresh perspectives with proven expertise.
Looking Ahead
With Samuelsson’s extensive playing background and a commitment to development, the Amerks hope to translate his on‑ice acumen into a competitive edge for the upcoming season. Fans can expect a renewed focus on disciplined play and strategic growth as the team builds around this experienced coaching core.
