Phillies Sign 17‑Year‑Old Taiwanese Pitcher Ho Hua to Historic $500,000 Deal

The agreement makes Hua the third Taiwanese player to join a Major League organization this year and marks the first pitching prospect from Taiwan to be drafted by Philadelphia.

A New Chapter for Taiwanese Pitching Talent

The Philadelphia Phillies announced this week that they have signed 17‑year‑old Taiwanese right‑hander Ho Hua, a move that adds a new chapter to the club’s growing interest in Asian talent.

Hua comes from Pingjen Senior High School, a program known for producing polished arms, and he has already showcased a five‑pitch repertoire that includes a fastball, slider, curveball, changeup and a rare splitter.

The deal was structured using international bonus pool money that the Phillies acquired in a trade with the Cleveland Guardians, a transaction that also sent right‑hander Ryan Degges to Cleveland. Degges had posted a 5.47 ERA with 29 strikeouts in nine outings before the swap.

Philadelphia’s front office emphasized patience, noting that Hua will be assigned to the minor leagues and given time to adjust to the rigors of professional baseball.

Hua’s signing follows the recent arrivals of fellow Taiwanese players Lin Youchen and Francys Romero, making him the third from the island nation to earn a contract with a Major League organization this year.
