A Strategic Transition
Phillip Reese has been promoted to head coach of the Blacksburg High School football team, taking over from Zack Leonard, who left the position for William Fleming High School several weeks ago.
Reese, a graduate of the University of Virginia's College at Wise, spent the past several years serving as the defensive line coach and strength and conditioning coach under Leonard, building a reputation for disciplined play and player development.
In a recent interview, Reese said he feels confident in the new role, citing Leonard's mentorship and the shared vision they crafted over the past six months as the foundation for the program's future.
The school board and athletic department praised Reese's deep familiarity with the team and his commitment to continuity, noting that his promotion reflects a strategic decision to maintain stability while injecting fresh energy into the program.
Community members and players alike have expressed optimism, believing that Reese's hands‑on approach and emphasis on teamwork will keep the team competitive in the upcoming season.
The move underscores a broader trend of internal promotions within the region's high school sports programs, where continuity and shared philosophy are increasingly valued.
