The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced a reshuffling of their rotation, postponing Paul Skenes’ scheduled start from Sunday’s series finale against the Red Sox to Wednesday’s matchup with the Detroit Tigers.

Skenes, who entered the season with a 9‑11 record and a 3.88 ERA, has seen his numbers dip since May, posting a 3‑9 record and a 5.00 ERA over his last 16 starts. The club notes that his physical condition remains unchanged, but the mental toll of a demanding schedule has become evident.
Manager Don Kelly explained that the decision is purely workload‑related, designed to give the 24‑year‑old a breather and to allow other starters extra recovery time as the season progresses.
In Skenes’ absence, the Pirates will turn to reliever Lake Bachar, who has posted a 3.97 ERA across 41 appearances this season. Bachar’s recent outings have shown promise, with four career starts yielding just two runs in nine innings while striking out 11 batters.
The timing of the move also reflects the team’s broader strategy; the Pirates are 3‑13 in games started by Skenes since May 17, a stretch that has tested both the pitcher and the club’s depth.
