The Detroit Pistons saw their campaign draw to a close on Tuesday night, falling 125-94 to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the seventh game of the Eastern Conference semifinals. The defeat capped a season that had promised much but ultimately fell short of expectations.
Detroit shot just 35.3 percent from the field and were outscored 58-34 in the paint, a disparity that underscored the challenges faced by a young roster. The Cavaliers built a 31-22 lead after the first quarter and never looked back, extending their advantage with a barrage of efficient scoring.
A Learning Night for Detroit
Coach J.B. Bickerstaff praised the team's resilience and growth, noting that the experience would serve as a foundation for the next chapter. "We learned a lot tonight," Bickerstaff said, "and we’ll take those lessons into the offseason."
Cade Cunningham, the Pistons' emerging star, expressed disappointment but also optimism, saying the loss would fuel the club’s drive to improve. "It’s tough to swallow, but we know what we need to work on," he remarked.
Ausar Thompson echoed the sentiment, adding that the defeat would serve as motivation for the upcoming months. "We’ll use this as a stepping stone," Thompson said.
On the other side, the Cavaliers rode a balanced attack to secure the victory. Donovan Mitchell poured in 26 points, including 15 in the third quarter, while Jarrett Allen and Sam Merrill each contributed 23 points. Evan Mobley finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds, helping Cleveland clinch a spot in the Eastern Conference finals for the first time since 2018.
The win marked a pivotal moment for the Cavaliers, who will now face the winner of the other semifinal in the conference finals. For Detroit, the offseason will be a period of reflection and reconstruction as they look to build on the progress made under Bickerstaff.
